Dampening engine bay noise

Well I'm in the process of finding out what all the excessive noise is in my Pinto. Even with an R1 can on its around 101 db.

I'm running CBR600 carbs with a pipercross foam filter. Its pretty quiet on that side with the choke in.

The noise in the engine bay seems to be from the rocker box. I've checked the tappet e.t.c and they are all fine. I just think its a noisey engine. I've put some of those heat mats in but they just made the bonnet heavier.

As its a MK its only got fibre glass side pannels so my first thought is ally pannels on the inside of these. Any other suggestions?

Make sure none of your panels vibrate. I stuck foam (camping mattress style) under my bonnet - weighs beggar all, but damps very nicely. With my borrowed db meter it dropped 1-2db.

Have you checked the cam shaft timing? Could be a cause of a rattle, when that's bob on, recheck ign timing.

Cheers

Rich

Iv been thinking about doing the same thing with my loud engine but am abit worried about the potential heat increase.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Hi,
The cam is standard Pinto one. There is a bit of wear on lobe #3 due to the inlet tappet being originally wound all the way off and the exhaust being loose.
The ignition timing is set to 8deg BTDC ( approx), no vac pipe disconnected, as suggested in the ford manual.

I was thinking of getting some dedening material from say inside a sharan and making a nice rocker box hat. This is under the assuption that its flame retardant and that if its a good fit, there shouldn't be enough heat on the rocker box to start a fire.

Speedy, i think if you do try and muffle it too much, youll take away more of the personality of the build??

With your particular project, it wouldnt feel right if it werent uncomfortable to drive, controversial, or causing aruments with track day scrutineers

Well I got hold of come peugot 206 diesel felt from a breakers for the price of a contribution to the tea fund.

Layered up 3 times above the rocker box seems to have worked quite well. I'm just peaking over 99dba in the garage, which hopefully in the open should be about it.

On a sort of related topic I have a Zetec with a Dunnell big bore exhaust and whilst it sounds great outside, the noise inside the car is loud. I have to wear ear plugs to drive for any distance. I was wondering if the noise is being radiated off the primaries and whether exhaust wrap until the exhaust exits the side of the engine bay would help. Does anybody have any experience?
