Propshaft shortening reccomendations
Getting my prop shortened is on of the next big jobs for my car.
Where is the best place to get it shortened. It sounds stupid but it needs to be as locost as possible but obviously needs to be a good job.
When i give them the measurements, do i measure from the front of the splined section in the gearbox to the diff, or leave an inch or so of spline?
Also, has anyone cut the prop themselfs and sent it off to be welded and does this make it cheaper?
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

I welded my own prop, by getting a piece of metal machined to fit inside each side of the prop (tight fit) to ensure it joined straight.
Worked well.

Bailey Morris did mine for under £50, a couple years back. I didn't want to bodge such a potentially dangerous part of my car, with my limited
skills  . Supplying the parts should save on the costs. A friend supplied the parts to them and they did another good job making his prop.
They have always been helpful and seem keen to do custom jobs and one offs.
Just IMHO

Not sure about doing that as it will be imbalanced and i have read plenty of horror stories on here about the prop snapping.

i went to dunning fairbank they did me a new 200bhp plus rated prop for £130 DELIVERED!
i dont see why anyone would want to skimp on such a safety critical part. just seems like madness to me consideing what people are willing to spend
on other less important parts

seconded here for bailey morris, was about £150 delivered. They went above and beyond as well... I didnt have a front CV that fit onto the
gearbox(T50) spline, they couldnt find one in any of their stockists and had to source one from norway!!
Brilliant work! and again not something you want to get wrong when its rotating at very high speed a couple of inches from your thigh, separated by a
thin sheet of ali and a bit of SHS.

Bailey Morris at Eaton Socon just off the A1 / A428 junction (West of Cambridge)
They are Very Good. Do NOT bodge this component.
A flailing prop doing 5000 rpm will slice thru your ally inner tunnel skin and take your leg off.
See this months PPC Mag, and read the article on Dave Walkers Workshop. He had a Se7en prop destroy itself on his rolling road with him sitting in the
drivers seat. It looks like someone took a Bacon Slicer to the tunnel panel. The remains of the prop look like a piece of Fuselli Pasta (Twisted into
a screw shape )
Also think of your passenger (Wife / Girlfriend / Son / Daughter) sitting in there!
Get this done professionally and be safe.
They will also want to know how many BHP is being run thru the shaft and can advise on the suitability of your shaft to handle that power. (probably
not a problem - but worth making sure its done properly and safely)

As above, in years past I’ve cut and shut quite a few props for my landys, but after seeing all the failures in this site and what happens, I would
not do it again, get it done properly.

Another vote for Dave Mac. They also do work for L/R prodn, so they know what they're doing.
Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

My local screw shop says baily morris is by far the best to go to.
My front prop will be redone by a pro, however my rear I am very happy with the strength as I used an internal sleeve to get it straight, it was such
a tight fit I could have go away without welding.
Plus it it does go wrong the fuel lines are protected by 3mm steel, and passesnger by 5mm steel plate, plus box section.
