Flames.... its not right!!! help!
I have been having running problems with my Pinto for a while now...
The engine was RR tuned last year and was running ok, but slowly its been getting worse...The issues were intermittant... now they are perminant!
basically I cant get it to run right.... Its a 1.6 running a 2.0L carb with standard electronic ignition...
I can get the engine to start but its almost like its missing... If I open up the throttle slightly it smooths out, but if I then open any wider I get
proper flames out of the exhaust....Its quite impressive... but not very useful!
I had thought the issue was caused by over fueling caused by a failed fuel reg... but I replaced that and the problem is still there...
It has new HT leads and dizzy cap+arm...
Is it possible that the coil is breaking up, not giving me a big enough spark and therefore not burning all the fuel in the combustion chamber?
What else could it be? The timing and tuning has not been touched since it was RRoaded.....
Im getting royally fed up with this... its a pinto...it should be simple lol!

It could have slipped on the dizzy this may need setting up again statically. Recheck the engine TDC timing to make sure the belt hasn't jumped
a tooth. have you altered the rockers at all you may have a valve not closing
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

i would say the timing needs looking at, flames exitting the exhaust port would indicate the valve isn't sealing properly or the valve is open
during the point of the fuel igniting.
I love Pinto's, even if i did get mine from P&O!

You could need new points. If you haven't tampered with it and it's been progressively getting worse it would seem likely.

Hi, try swinging the dizzy whilst running the engine to see if it gets better or worse this will show if its just ign timing also try a visual cam
timing check
if none of this helps do a compression test and report back
Ray
P.S. mark the distibutor first so you can put it back the same if it doesnt help

sounds like very retarded ignition - as above try moving the dizzy whilst it is running to see if it improves. would be worth checking the cam belt
for correct timing too.
"That thing you're thinking - it wont be that."

Will see if I can get a timing strobe and give that a shot..
It doesnt have points, its electronic....
If I lift the rocker cover what should I be looking for/checking in there?

You need to check that the valve clearances are correct and that the cam hasn't worn. (common problem on old Pinto lumps) Might also be worth
changing the spark plugs for some new ones
