What Actually Defines a Duratec Engine... ???

Saw THIS and it got me thinking...

The ST170 engine is a Zetec with variable cam control, but is advertised by Ford as being a Duratec engine. Anyone know why this came to be the case?

IIRC the 1.3 KA engine is also badged 'Duratec' and is in fact a tarted up, fuel injected Crossflow!

Bit of a bugger if you bought that Westie thinking you were getting a 'real' Duratec... still, you'd probably not be disappointed with the ST170.

I think they dropped the crossflow nearing the end of the mk1 KAs life. The 1.3 Duratec in the KA is a SOHC engine (possibily called ROCAM, not sure on that one).

Ford also call its current V6's Duratecs aswell, keeps remembering all the names simple though!

Edit:

and the Volvo T5 derived engine in the ST is badged Duratec too.

from what i can tell, the basic mondeo 2.0 litre 4 pot duratec, has exhaust on the drivers side if you put it inline, and the zetec exhaust goes down the passenger side when engine fitted inline.

All ford petrol engines are now badged duratecs, even some of the old zetecs were rebadged. Sorry no help

Have been doing a lot of research on duratecs recently due to needing wiring diagrams for LPG conversion

yeah, they dropped the 'endura' in favour of the brazilian engines - basically a zetec SE (the small all alloy one) but with a SOHC to make it cheaper

and the 1.6 in sthe sport KA is the same SOHC I think

(the endura was an updated HCS, which is an updated valencia, which was roughly based on a shortened x-flow, wich was an updated kent - I think they got there moneys worth out of that design )

The SOHC "ROCAM" engine is a Brazilian iron blocked design with a chain driven cam, I don't think it shares much if anything with the Yamaha designed Zetec SE?

There is a very good animation of the ROCAM engine on YouTube.

But then, how do you define the "passenger" side as all of you UK guys have the steering wheel at the wrong side ?

easy one, ALLOY block!

duratecs (HE) are all alloy blocks and come in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 format

all others, 1.6, 1.3 and whatever alloys are Zetec SE and all Iron block 1.8's, 2.0 etc are Zetec E or for the 2.3 the DOHC I4 (like the RS2000)
and then there's the V6 wich is nothing of the above but still all alloy

Amusingly (and it's not April AFAIK) PPC this month are reporting that Ford are going to manufacture a "Duratec 110PS" which is actually a 1.6 litre Kent for putting into formula fords and heritage racers.
They are going to re-manufacture the block with some modern techniques to make it 'more durable' whatever that means.

I've always been confused by Ford's recent engine names and now I know why!

RHD is the way it should be, LHD cars are wrong because the ignition is the wrong side of the wheel for starting a car without being in it.

I may be looking at the wrong bit, but the only V8 I can find on there is the "SHO V8" which was apparently never given the Duratec name?
