Fuel Pump Location

I'm looking at fuel pump location for a Toyota Twin cam running injection.

Options for the pump location are; slightly below the tank but in the flow of dirty air below the car, or elevated to being in line with the top of the tank but then having to lift fuel when the tank level is low.

I prefer the second option to prevent things getting damaged but am concerned about having the pump above the fuel level. Will this cause the pump to cavitate - on basis that pumps push liquid rather than pull vapour.

Also - if I go for the second option will I need to prime the pump or fit and non-return valve in the fuel line to prevent it draining when I switch off?

I'm told that the Bosch Fuel Pumps need a gravity feed.

I mounted mine level with the bottom of the tank.

Mine's also a Bosch, also mounted level with the bottom of the tank. If you are worried about sh|te getting on the pump, I found that mine was a good fit inside a piece of fuel filler hose. I cut off a piece about the same length as the pump and made a P-shaped clip out of ali. It seems to have been OK (4 years so far) and the filler hose must give a bit of extra protection.
