head polishing
hi,
sitting here polishing up my duratec head but want to ask howfar to go.
So far i am just taking the ruf edges away and cleaning witha wire wheel.
Should i go all the way with the stone though and take away all the casting ripples throughout?? or just the joins in material??
I know i dont want to get it too smooth, this is why i ask.
thanks again

just grind off the rough edges. you hould have some dimples and ripples left. think golf ball. those dimples make it fly through the air better
because the air flies over the ball better.

don't know duratecs but the best way to tell is to pop off manifolds and have a look. if it looks smooth, leave it be if it has obvious
intrusions left from manufacture, grind them off.
simples.

you want the exhaust ports nice and smooth, cause its not really like a ball moving through the air...its like blowing through a pipe.
the inlet ports should be rough to stop the fuel condensating and keep the air fuel mix good.

Both inlet and exhaust ports should ideally be smooth (as A1 says a cylinder head isn't a golf ball, so dimples are bad) with about a 60 grit
finish. You can go shinier on the exhaust ports, but it doesn't actually gain anything.

Hi Joe,
What I did to mine was to just use a sanding drum in a dremel to remove the casting marks and generally smooth the ports all the way down. I also took
the sharp edge off the short turn on the inlet ports.
I figured I may as well do it while the head was off.
I also took any sharp corners off in the combustion chamber, not a huge amount of material, just enough to break the edge to avoid any hot spots.

ok thanks guys.
I have done the same as Flak for now but may smooth the exhaust ports out the whole way, just taken off marks and sharp edges for now.
Will have a play this eve if i get the chance.
thanks again
