As you look at the pulley 'end on' it'll be a small tab on the block at about 4 o'clock. The one on the pulley is hard to
find unless it's clean. I had a hell of a job finding mine. It is there. There will be a notch. I think it's on the rear face.

I thought the second mark was on the block? I don't have one on mine cos I have a different sump. Not sure if it's the same on all
versions of the Zetec.

For valve timing the crank is locked with a pin near to the flywheel.

on my silver top havent seen any referance to use of a pin just marks on front pully, PPC mag had a interesting bit about finding TDC this month

On silver and blacktop engines, a pin is used to lock the crank from clockwise rotation. It screws into the block just above the starter on a RWD
configuration, you will see a blanking plug in there.
U2U me you email address and I'll send you a PDF of the manual covering this....

Agreed, it's in your PDF in the section on removal of the crankshaft pulley. Mind you, it says use this method if you have an auto box, but
otherwise use the camshaft locking tool and get someone to stand on the brakes.
It also confirms that (on the silver top at least) the timing mark is on the sump - so I don't have one!

I didn't have timing marks on my sump either as it is the westfield shortened one, there is a raised part of the casting but it didn't
line up with the crank pulley notches so I didn't use it.
What I did is lock the cams as normal with flat bar, then to get TDC I fixed a bent piece of wire to the engine so it pointed to the crank pulley,
then put a screw driver down number one cylinder and turned the engine untill the screwdriver started to sink and marked this point on the pulley,
then turned the engine the other way until the screwdriver sank again and marked this point, measured between the two points and there is TDC.
