Type 9 woes

Hi all,

I took the indy out for the second blat of the year this morning and am having a problem with my gearbox.
while driving normaly it changes gear nice and smooth but as soon as i get a bit spirited,it refuses to engage second and crunches the synchromesh.
I have a nasty feeling that the syncro is getting weak.

What hack's me off is that i had two spare box's and i gave one away and sold the other.I know i won't be able to buy one now for the money i sold it for

All feedback and opinion's will be greatly recieved,as always.

Andy

Synchro on second is a common weak spot in a lot of boxes, and the T9 is no different.

Its not a difficult job to rebuild a box, even easier to rebuild the main shaft with new synchros as it doesnt require a full strip down.

On the other hand you can often still get them for pretty cheap prices...

Just a total guess, but what about when you are giving it some welly, The gearbox at the shaft end moves down. Would it be possible that the gear stick is catching on the tunnel and not going into gear properly. If so could be the gearbox mount getting soft, allowing to much travel.

Adrian

Why do I have to make the tools to finish the job? More time then money.

Adrian,

I have 2" clearance between the stick and the chassis member,so no problems there.

Cheers david
It looks like it could be an engine and box out job then,sh**e!!! I have just converted to zetec and finished putting the ba****d in

Could be worth trying some different oil too. Make sure its GL4 and NOT GL5, 5 isnt compatable with boxes with bronze parts like the Type 9.

Castrol do several differnt GL4 gearbox oils.

Thing is David,

the problem wasn't there last year with the pinto on the front of the box.The oil is the same as it has been for the last 1500 miles.

Maybe the problem has always been there but it needed a bit more power through it to bring the weak synchro to light.

Thank you for the advice,as always.

The hunt for a new box on ebay will now commence.

as a different engine and also clutch are you sure the clutch is clearing properly when in spirit mode.

Tbh, i dont know.

The zetec has maybe 25-30 bhp more than the pinto but as i say maybe it just needed that bit extra to tip the balance.

Wooly,

that's what i thought but i have adjusted the clutch to give more release and it's no different.

It's not likely to be anything to do with more power (although higher revs won't help). After all your foot isn't on the gas when changing gear is it? Thick oil causing the synchro to accelerate to slowly or just plain worn out is the likely culprit IMHO. Second gear gets a caning on the change and tends to fail earliest.

Possibly a silly question - but is your clutch releasing fully when you put your foot down?

Slight dragging can mess up the gearchange, and as you've just swapped engines maybe something's not quite right.

On the other hand - if it's OK - just ignore me!

I agree with second getting the most hammer in a seven,i think it's just knackered.

David,

the clutch does seem to be fully releasing as it will go into all other gears no problem.

Kieth,

cheers for the link mate and thanks for the comment about my car, just a shame you didn't stop when we saw each other.
