4 speed to 5 speed, Type 2,3,4 and 9 boxes....
If one had a car with a type 2 or 3 four speed gearbox, and one removed it and fitted a type 9, would the existing prop shaft, gear selector hole and
engine mounts be suitable?
I know there is a bulge in the alloy end casing for 5th gear, but beyond that is the external architecture the same?

Dose burton's website give dimentions on all tha boxes?they have pics on there so might help abit?

The type 9 is much bigger in length and width so the propshaft will need shortening and the splined end changing.
The bellhousing is also larger where the fork exits - the fork all exits at a different angle.
The mounting will need to be repositioned much further back as will the hole for the selector.

Type 2&3boxes also had 7/8th x 20 spline input shafts the Type 9 has 1" x 23

Hmm, so any 4 speed car that Id like to upgrade to 5 speed is going to need extensive work....

No...if the 4 speed is the "Type E" (as described on Burtons web page), then the only change required for a Type 9 is moving the gearbox
mounting and possibly the gear lever hole in your tunnel. The overall length is the same so the prop will fit.
However, not all people would consider a standard Type 9 an "upgrade" in this case! The 4 speeder has pretty decent ratios but the Type 9
has an almost unusable first gear in a light car.
