MAPS explained please.. no not ordanance survey ;)

I have a very loose understanding of what mapping an ecu does but would like to know more. Mainly why different maps/ I get the idea of a map for your setup of fuel nput type, exhaust, cam and stuff but where do maps come in for different requirements of performance, style of driving etc. I guess a map for the track may not be that suitable for the road.

I have a power commander III usb. Can you save the map that is in it at the moment to revert to if you remap and not happy with it?

Anyone got a good power commander map for road driving (dont' you dare ) for this setup.

2002 R1 injection.
Piper cross filter
4 to 1 MNR manifold/can
power commander III
3.38 lsd

I have a similar set-up apart from my exhaust is a 4-2-1 race system, as I haven't had time to go and get mine mapped I am just using a standard map down loaded from the Power Commander Website. The actual map I am using is the one for 'R1 engine / air filter / full akropovic exhaust system' and to be honest it runs well enough albeit a bit too rich

To answer your question, you can download the existing map to your laptop then load up others and if no change then you can put the old map back in. If need be you can also change the parameters of the Map whilst the engine is running, i.e. to help with the idle etc

My SVA tester allowed me to change my map whilst it was having its emissions test, to ensure it got through

power commander do an lcd screen readout with an sd card slot. I have one on the Motaleira. Apart from rpm and fuel readings, you can store maps that you can swap around. Just select a map and send it. Turn the ignition off and on and new map installed.
You only really need two maps, one for your emissions come IVA or MOT time and one for the road
