Zetec turbo ?
Peep's
For a couple of years now i have been harbouring thought's of a turbo.
I currently run a 2.0 zetec with zx9r carbs, in my Indy and quite like the idea of running say 5-6 psi of boost, for just a little more go.
Year's ago me and my mates played with an R5 turbo and a Metro turbo,so i know it can be done with carbs.
Do you all think it is a viable project or should i forget it?
If it could be done with the bike carbs what other, than the associated hardware would i need to do?
What do you all think?
I wait to be shot down in flame's

There are two types of carb turbo set up, compressor flow upstream or downstream of the carb, both of which have various advantages and disadvantages.
I'd say you would be better off getting an injection setup if you're going to go to the effort of turbo'ing. Also I'd look at
compression ratio of your engine, you may find that an NA engine is just too high for it to be worth it - maybe consider fitting a decompression
plate?
A bird in the hand....

I have an XR2 turbo technics (blown through the stock weber carb) and its been a fantastic conversion since I did it back in 2002.
I also quite fancy trying bike carbs on this set-up so would be interested in hearing comments.
As far as I can see it'd be pretty straight forward and if an old twin choke weber can handle boost I see no reason why the refined bike carbs
couldnt.

I was planning on turboing a zetec, but love the roar of TBs.
So my stuff has been sold, still have a turbo though, from a 2l impreza, flows just right for the zetec.
Let me know if you are interested.
I do not know anything about turboing carbs.
But can tell you that std compression is 10:1, and i have heard from a couple of sources that the std compression can take 5-6 psi

Have a word with Jambojeef over in Hexham. He did a home brew turbo on his CBR1000, running a Rover 75 turbo through the standard set of carbs. I
think the only things over and above a normal BEC install were a rising rate fuel reg, the exhaust manifold, turbo, extra oil cooling and the inlet
manifold, which basically replaces the airbox.
Oh yeah, and an intercooler and yards of ally pipe / silicone!

I'm not too clue'd up on carbs, as to wether or not it'd make sense to use them with the turbo engine, but i've turbo'd
zetec engines in the past, i'm quite local to you if you needed any help/advise.
My mate currently has a zetec turbo engine that i built for sale, standard head with eagle con rods and JE pistons, c/r 8:1, would go nicely in your
car.
Or you could keep your engine use a spacer plate to lower c/r, drill and tap your head, use exhaust manifold from an escort rs turbo which would be
adequate for the boost youre thinking.
