Diff questions

Right, there's a story to be told here;

I got a 3.62 LSD with my kit when I got it originally. Friend of mine with a Westfield had a broken diff, and as I'm far off actually needing it I said I'd lend it to him. Now he's decided to sell the Westie, and he asked me if he could keep it and get me a replacement, to which I said yes. No problems there, he's a good friend and have no need to distrust him when it comes to replacement.

As it stands, I've got a 3.62 non-LSD for push-in shafts in the garage as a spare, but wondered how easy it would be if I was to modify that with say a Quaife diff and convert it to bolt-on shafts? From what I can see on eBay, replacement LSD's are about £200-£230 plus P&P (usually about £20-30), whereas Quaife ones are about £550 from Burton.

What are people's thoughts on my predicament? I'm in no rush so could easily wait and get the Quaife unit, but is it worth the additional money?

Thoughts on a postcard, please....
[or alternatively post them here]

I have a 100,000+ miles sierra LSD in the rear of mine, its tight enough to allow both rear wheels to light up together, these cars weigh so little I would question the need for the extra expense unless you are really serious on the track.

Never used a quaife myself, suspect better when in an escort where the loads are heavier.

2wd Cosworth diff in the back of mine. Transformed the car, much tighter now and only cost me £80 at the breakers.

Its a 7" 3.92 btw.

I had a Tran-X LSD in my Calibra then changed to a Quaife unit, which was smoother. But as stated, that was in a tintop and not a 7.

Just trying to figure out if it is someting that's worth spending an additional £250-300 on, or just take the std Sierra lsd and roll with it.

I think the diff I had was from an XR4i or XR4x4 (3.62 ratio), but what other lsd units are available in 7" form as a replacement, and what ratios are there? Any ones I should especially aim for??

You can swap the CWP about with the LSD, think you will only get 3.62 with, I put a 3.14 into my 3.62 casing.

[pedant] Then it's not a 2wd Cosworth diff, it's a 2-litre DOHC XR4x4 diff [/pedant]
