Probe engine

If the probe engine is Mazda based will it fit a mx5 gearbox?

Not sure if the probe engine (2l) is mazda based - after all , the V6 in the probe was made in Michigan
And from what I have read on various forum's , the 2 litre is not a great engine.................

I'm not sure, but do remember that the 1.8 V6 out of the mx-3 was meant to be a direct bolt on to the mk1 mx-5 box.
I think the Probe's 2.5 v6 is the same family of engines as the 1.8, so I can't see why not.
I'll ask some of my mates stateside who tune Miatas(mx-5's), they know a hell of alot about them.

The Mx5 box will go straight on the KL V6 - clutch splines are the same , the release bearing is in the right place - perfect...............except not one bolt lines up , and theres nowhere to put the starter motor !

The 2.5 engine was a mazda engine out of the MX6 and where not a especially good engine and I know parts where extremly expensive (£1800 for a exhaust so i'm told! ) and the 2.0 didnt have much go in them.

Yep - steel crank and rods
There was a twin turbo race car in Australia with a KL based twin turbo motor - stock crank and block , that made 800 BHP !

I always fancied fitting 1 in a MX-5.

Put that engine in a car it deserves, i think 99% of the bad press is due to the sh!7box Ford it's fitted in.

I've been helping do just that - and it fit's like it grew there
Dont forget the same engine is allso in the Mazda 626 , Mx6 , 323 (in 2litre form) and Mx3 (as a 1.8)

Why do so many people go for the "Stick a V8 in it!!" approach.
And then say"Just buy a bolt-in kit", where's the fun in building that?
The whole point of buil;ding a car is to let your imagination run wild and build something you want and is original.
So, if there's a bolt-in kit, it's not that original, is it?
My dad and I, did once measure a friends MX-5 up to see if a V8 would fit, but it was a Bentley Turbo R engine, with aBorg-Warner T56 6-speed Corvette box fitted
So it was a little original, but we could only make it fit, if we band sawed the car down the middle and added at least 3" to the wideth(which we did consider doing!!)

I take it all back then! I was just going on experiences of someone that I work with who had one and was regually going wrong! but im more than happy to be corrected!

i think i know about original, who else is fitting a dodge viper v10 in a 7 replica, i just like the idea of a kit to fit a v8 in an MX5

Sorry, spent too long in California, in my early driving year.
It's amazingly common to have a Lil' Monster Miata, or similar conversion kit.

I do like your V10 se7en, I can't wait to see it in the flesh at some point.

I keeop getting tempted by one of claires conversions to drop in Tango then the mrs hears my thoughts and slaps me down again.

One day there will be a sweeeet little mazda V6 mated to an MX5 box in a car I build

Yes, V8 MX5s are ten-a-penny over the pond.

You can fit all sorts in the MX5 chassis, with only *minor* chopping...

So, clairetoo... I hear these Mazda V6 engines are awful boat anchors. Has anyone ever used one in a kit car or an engine swap? Surely, only being available as a FWD layout, they won't work in a RWD car...
