black top mileage?

Hello all,

I have been offered a black top 2.0 zetec engine complete, its done 130,000 miles but apparently runs well.

Should I go for it and try it or rebuild first? What would be reccommended? head gasket? valve seals? deffo cambelt but is that mileage too high??

Thanks in advance

Andy

You can buy a complete brand new unit for about £700 , the cost of a decent rebuild could be more?

If it is cheap, i would have it and just strip it down to inspect bearings etc. I brought my engine not knowing the mileage, stripped it down and it was in much better dondition than i was expecting.

Changed the head, inlet and exhaust gasket while i was there too.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Depends on price. Needs to be £50-75 with that mileage.

Buy it, change the oil / filter, and try it, don't bother stripping to inspect IMHO.

Mine [2.0] cost £85 with 65k, if the seller was telling the truth!

My previous 1.8 was £60, and though it went fine made a few funny noises so I swapped it.

Go for it but dont rebuild it. Just a full service inc cambelt.

The parts for a full rebuild with out machine work come to the same price as a new engine.

If its had regular oil changes and doesnt use water it will be fine.

I spent £600 rebuilding mine for no other reason than I could. You could still see the honning patern in the bores.

In my opinion spend the cash on a good sump.......

Fast Car mag stripped a 170K zetec for inspection and found nothing worn, hone marks still on the bores.

New oil filter, oil and cambelt and away you go.

Zetecs are cheap enough to not need rebuilding and are solid motors.

I have been told by an engine builder (Puma Racing) that he has seen engines with 200k that are as new.
Therefor I would just give it a change of fluids and filters, the a cosmetic cleanup fit it and run it.
