i'd think it'd be too much torque that would kill an axle myself.

its not so much just the power/torque, but the weight of the car its in too i think, isn't it?
putting 1000bhp through a car that is just made of an axle, engine and gearbox probably won't break it, but put it in a car weighing 7tons, it won't last long
