Inlet manifold studs

Just fitting the inlet manifold and Weber 45's carbs to my zetec tonight. A few problems arose.

1. I am using misab plates which are considerably thinner than the spacer \ o ring setup. All of the top carb mounting studs needed shortening by 4 threads (about 4 \ 5mm) to allow the carbs to be mounted correctly. However it's still going to be a pain trying to tighten those nuts up.

2. I looked at the thread on the mounting studs..looked like M8 1.25 to me to proceeded to tighten an M8 nut to one of the studs... it wouldn't fit. So I chased the thread down with a M8 1.25 die and the nut then fitted perfectly.

So I did the same on the other 7 studs.

I have now realised that the original thread on the studs was BSW 5/16 18 threads per inch

So I guess the questions are:

How has anyone else got round the problem of the top mounting studs being too long when using misab plates.

Have I knackered the studs by re-threading them from BSW 5/16 to M8 1.25 ? If so where do you buy new ones from ?

thanks

Hi

I had new studs fitted by Northampton motorsport, I'm sure they'd sell you some tel, 01604766624

Don't forget with mishab washers you dont tighten the nuts right up, you have to let them move slightly to reduce vibrations in the carbs

thanks, even with the bobbins and the misabs the top studs still fouled on the carbs.

I think you will find they are 5/16" UNC which is quite similar different from Whitworth --- different flank angles and I think in the 5/16" size a different TPI.
