how carbs work
No i have a fairly basic understanding of how carbs work, but would like to learn a bit of how they work. Does anyone have any good websites i can
look at?
Also im still fiddling trying to get my car running. And im convinced its still overfuelling. Had a look to day and all the float valves work fine
(when i hold the carbs upside down i cant blow through the fuel inlet) and all move freely.
THe one thing im not sure about is the black sliders in the middle of the carbs. they are gsxr600 carbs. Can anyone explain quickly how these work. I
would have thought they should be moving up and down when cranking to let the relavant amount of air through, but mine dont seem to be doing
anything?

I'm not sure whether your carbs are Keihin or Mikuni, but the following description isn't bad:
Keihin CV carb
They are talking about a single Keihin carb (for a motorbike) but it's not too hard to understand.

so the slide is omved up and down simply by pressure? Should they be moving up and down when cranking the engine over?
If they are suppose to then that could explain why im overfuelling, if there is a normal amount of petrol coming through, but reduced air, this will
richen the fuel mixture which could explain my starting problems?

The slides should be down when the engine is idling or at low throttle. They move open at mid throttle and are wide open at full throttle.

Check the damper diaphragms aren't punctured and that the damper springs are present.
If the article DJ ^^ mentions isn't clear enough ones on Strombergs could help as they are a similar set up.
FYI other types of carb (e.g. SU) don't have a diaphragm but a damper pot as part of the slide with a piston fixed to the main body. The pot
needs thin oil to damp the slider.
The slides shouldn't rise and fall at idle.
