Pinto Cylinder Heads

Whats the effect of putting a 1600 cylinder head onto a 2 litre pinto engine, i realise it will raise the compression ratio as the combustion chambers will be smaller but is there anything else, also what effect will raising the compression ratio have on the engine. The reason i'm asking is that i want to do a bit of mild porting on a cyl head and possibly get the valve guides machined / re lined and hardened valve seats put in for unleaded fuel but ive only got 1600 cylinder head (other than whats already on the engine and i dont want to take the car off the road) Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using a 1600 head on a 2.0 l engine, i intend to put a fast road cam in and use the existing 2.0 litre valves Thanks

Not worth the time or effort. Buy a 2.0 injection head, much better ports and quite a few more ponies stock!

Better off working from that head as a base to port (not really necessary for a fast road engine) and then fit big inlet valves (again, only if you really must!).

valves may be smaller. Last thing you want to do is restrict the breathing. why not go for it as a winter upgrade then no real problem if the cars off the road

1600 cylinder head has 38cc chambers 2000 head has 48cc
A 1600 head on a 2L will give around 12 to 1 compression ratio, with bigger valves and the chamber relived to unshroud them could drop it to 11.5 to 1
Standard pistons are good to 10.5 to 1
Super unleaded good for up to 10.8 to 1

^^ most 2.0's have a 9.2 to 1 CR

(but there are low comp engines that have 8.2 to 1)

the 1.6 head is one way of increasing the CR, but its standard valves are smaller so a skimmed 2.0 head is an easier option to up the CR

the higer the CR the more efficent your engine should be, but the higher the grade of fuel you'll need to put in it to avoid pinking (aka: pre-ignition)
I've read that up to 10.3 to 1 you can still use 95 RON, but 97 RON will let you take that to 10.8 to 1

IF you are thinking of doing that way, then the head to get is a 1.6GT head (from a Mk3 Cortina or a later model Capri or a proper Mk2 RWD escort). These had the 2.0 camshaft, valves and porting as factory standard. The only trouble is that they (the 1.6GT heads) tend to be a bit like Hens Teeth these days.
