Engine and transaxle

Hi everyone, I need some help from your collective knowledge..

So I have my Mojo on the road and want to start planning my next project.
I want to build a single seater from scratch, something along the lines of a mclaren mp4/7.
I want to use a Ford Zetec SE engine. Can anyone tell me of a suitable gearbox/transaxle that will mate to the SE. I have found that the Renault UN1 would fit with the layout but is there a suitable bellhousing available? and are the boxes and bellhousing readily available.
Failing this can someone recomend a suitable engine and box that I could mount longitudanly with the drive quite close to the point where they meet.
Does anyone rate the audi/vw engines and boxes from the A4 and Passat?

Thanks in advance...

I have the 1.8 20 valve turbo in my golf mk4. Cant knock it for performance since its remap now running around 195 BHP these engines can push out 300bhp with not too much done to them. One weaknes is the coil pack and the water pump. I would deffo consider it mated to the Passat Box

My initial reaction would definitely be Hewland.

I used to labout under the missaprehension that all transaxles were all much of a muchness. They all looked the same in the pics.
Then I got to see a Hewland close up and compared to a Passat / Audi box it's tiny.

That's significant when hung out the back of a single seater.

If I could afford a Hewland, that's what I would have.

If I couldn't, I would have a beetle box and flip it over.

Take all of the above with quite a pinch of salt.
That's what I would want to do.
The feasability is another issue.

The VAG B5 box would be much easier to do though, but it's so much bigger and heavier.

Austin Man is right, for your application the correct donor is a 1.8t Passat, or Audi A4 (same thing really)

You can get a 6 speed box brand new from VAG, so I'm told, for less than £1K, which will fit, comes from one of the diesel models, as a future upgrade, but the standard 5 speed will do for the time being.

Easy option is to look for a transmission and then the engines that are designed to fit it.

I started to mate a Cosworth 24V to a UN1, but there is loads of work involved and it was taking too much time.

Here is a picture of it that is too big to attach.

Ive now gone for a renault 21 turbo engine.

Your options for the UN1 could be quite limited (as ive found) though if you go VAG or Porsche, then they open up a bit.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Funnily enough I had seen that car on ebay.
I keep coming back to the audi's, i'm concerned that the 1.8T with the inlet it may bee too wide for the shape I want to achieve. But looking again at the ebay car it may not be a problem as that V6 seems only just as wide as someones shoulders.
Time to find some bits to measure I think.
