Blacktop Waterpump

Hi guys, will be fitting a new waterpump to my blacktop before I put it in the car and the waterpump itself has a rubber square O ring around the edge of it, the old one I've took off had this o ring too but also had some black rubber sealer on it as well.

So was that standard or a bodge by the previous owner??

Just want to do it right, I'm thinking that a small amount of silicone wouldn't do any harm.

Cheers

Rich
