Suitable starter motor for YB/T9 (wiring too)
Mated the YB up to the type 9 today and all was good until I tried to fit the starter... was a no go.
Looks like the YB sump is too wide to allow the pinto starter on.
Flywheel is a turned down cosworth 9 hole with pinto ring gear fitted, slotted into a capri bell housing nicely, only issue seems to be the
starter...
Any peeps on here have the same issue?
Any suggestions to a solution?
Could put the pinto sump on maybe but its a horrid twisted oily leaking mess!

I had. 2WD YB sump on my pinto, type 9 with standard cast bellhousing and then an RS2000 ally one, did not have a problem with either but did have to
modify the dust plate for the ally bellhousing.
What starter is it? Early starters were huge, later ones are more compact.
An expensive option is a geared high torque, you can move the starter on the mounting face to twist it away

This is the one... It looks early? and quite fat!
I'll try the local factors for a new starter to see if it fits, only place I've seen those high torques is on ebay.
Anyone on here have a second hand pinto starter?
What do you mean by- you can move the starter on the mounting face to twist it away ??

It looks like a CVH short nose one.
The mounting face of the geared starters can be moved allowing the starter to twist around it's axis moving the large motor away from the
block

Lynx AE supply decent gear reduction motors at resonable prices, I got mine from there for my old crossflow and was impressed

hi, firstly a yb needs to go on a t5 ,a t9 isnt up to the job.
cossie flywheel is bigger than a pinto one so youll have trouble getting a starter thatll fit unless you use a special flywheel you cant use a pinto
flywheel on a cossie crank the pinto is 6 holes cossie is 9

Seems that Lynx AE (thanks prawnabie!) have the starter I need... reduction geared higher powered job, has a thinner body to allow it to fit against
the sump.
I hear the reduction geared motors are sore on ring gear and pinions??
Hadn't budgeted for this but I suppose it's better than buying blindly from ebay.

Starter arrived today.. only ordered last night!! Anyways
The new starter only has 2 connections, old one had 3.
Can anyone tell me what goes where and whats left out, why?
Also is the pinion supposed to be on contact with the fly wheel at all times? Defo seems to be touching when held in place.
Obviously terminals A are the same.. Earth
Both have spade, old also has pole connector..

ok, the big threaded one is for the big lead direct from battery positive, small spade for exciter wire from ign switch the old one had an extra wire
to provide a 12v feed to the coil when cranking as it was for use in a ballasted ign system

also the pinion should be clear from the starter ring when you bolt it in and only contact when energised when the pinion throws forward.

Yes, Thanks! A is the positive... Doh!
I've no need for C at all cause Im on m-jolt.
Need to check for clearance of the flywheel, as it was a machined down cosworth job it may be in the wrong position.
edit- LOL the ring gear is 5mm too close to the dust plate..
