zetec ignition timing - how to check

Hi, looking at fitting megajolt to my 2.0l, as an upgrade to to my esc, im an old school engine person, pinto, cvh etc, how do i go about checking my ignition timing, as i used the my old cvh front pulley, and mounted the pick up on a bracket, on my zetec as the engine i bought was from an auto. have heard you can check it with a timinig light, how do you go about this, where are the pionters etc, anybody got a base map for megajolt i can use for the zetec on bike carbs, many thanks.
Andy

have you fitted a manual box with the zetec flywheel if so all you need is the standard pick up sensor it would be spot on with the timing

Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

Without the megajolt powered up the ignition will be in limp home mode, which means the ignition wont advance as the revs increase, so you can check this with a timing light and rev the engine and it shouldn't change, try again with the megajolt powered up and the ignition marks should move about as the revs change.

Not sure where the timing marks are on a zetec but should be in the haynes books. I'll be doing this exercise in the next few weeks! You'll need a timing light that isnt affected by the wasted spark btw.

Hope this helps

Rich

I seem to remember that there are no timing marks on a 2.0 zetec. You have two "5mm" slots in the camshafts to lock them into position, and a removable plug in the block so you can insert a tool to lock the crank at TDC. But if I am wrong then I apologise.....

The basic timing on a Zetec engine can't be wrong because one of the flywheel to crank bolts is slightly offset and the position of the crank sensor is fixed.

Ah, ok so it'll be as I said as above but to check if the megajolt is working is to significantly adjust one of the settings and listen for a change in the idle speed etc.

Cheers
