VX engine and type 9 gearbox help please
I am considering mating a 5 speed Ford 'type 9' gearbox with a 2.0l 16 valve Vauxhall 'red top' engine putting out about
225bhp.
Does anyone know if the gearbox is up to this sort of power or will I be breaking them for a past time?
Is the box compatible or are there a lot of potential problems to overcome?
Will an XR4i to red top bellhousing be suitable or is it different?
Many thanks as usual for any help you can offer.
Michael

You can buy heavy duty ones to handle that power:

What sort of spec do u have on the redtop to get 225bhp??

Xr4i to redtop bellhousing will have an extra 25mm included to accomodate the longer input shaft of the v6 box. Remember there are also 2 options for
the angle of mounting the engine. You have upright mounting and ones for 7 degree. The type 9 in its beefed up v6 form is on its limit at 180-190bhp.
Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

done many a time
done it myself (sort of, mines a ecotec)
gearbox should be fine with that power. think they say the type 9 is good to 190bhp? but think thats based on a car the weight of a sierra, in a 7
type car, it shouldn't be a problem.
what you'll need though, is a bellhousing from somewhere like yukspeed (www.yukspeed.com top man he is )
and a clutch cylinder, i tried many a home brew set up for this, in the end, i just got one from rally design, and wish i had from the start...

you'll need the clutch cylinder, release bearing, gearbox mount, and a spacer. rally design don't seem to sell spacers, and you'll
need to measure the correct size you need. you can also get all the above parts from burtonpower.com, inc the spacers, not sure how the prices compare
though. hydraulic hoses i'd get from russbost on here, he can make you any hose with any fittings you need, any length.
you'll also need a clutch plate to fit in the vauxhall clutch cover, think its a ford sierra 2.3 diesel one you need in the red top?
you'll need to check that though.
hmm, think thats about it, quite an expensive set up, but well worth it i think

Be careful on the clutch choice. The std cover along with a Sierra friction plate will be over the limit if you have 225 bhp. Its not so much the
power but amount of torque the engine delivers that the std plates cant handle.
You are going to need a Helix setup which can be bought from MERLIN/SBD or QED, not cheap though. I paid 300 quid for my setup but will easily handle
260/270 bhp now.

Used to run a standard type 9 Gearbox with an SBD heavy duty Clutch set-up and 220 bhp
It was ok but i wanted better ratios, So now have a BGH Semi Helical Gearbox which i'm well Pleased with
To be fair to the Type 9 they are a good box and are also cheap as chips for a standard one
