mid engine vfr buggy drivetrain concept
Hello folks,
I'm looking to build a buggy/kart of sorts and I'm thinking about the engine/drive train.
I want this to be as simple as possible and I was thinking about the following:
Mounting a vfr/ other v4 bike engine 'sideways' infront of the rear wheels with the sprocket pointing out the back and mating a ford/mazda
rear differential directly to the sprocket. To me this seems like the simplest way and avoids fabricating a chain driven diff.
I'm concerned that the diff might sit a little high making drive shaft angles quite steep but it might work.
Has anyone seen something like this before, or have any ideas/ opinion on the feasibility of this concept?
Thanks in advance
Ben

Its doable,
Couple things i can think of...
You will have to solid mount the diff and engine, which could cause some vibrations, The mate will have to be perfect aswell.
I dont see why the diff would have to be high? You want the engine as low as poss, so the diff would be just as low. Should be fine.
ETA: Just saw you were new so welcome

couple of things to consider ,using a car differential means having two final drive reduction ratios so using small wheels could mean a very low top
speed which might be fine for off road use and a simlpe coupling solution would be to use a rubber drive coupling like the old hillman imp used to use
or a front coupling from a mt75 or transit would work giving a cush drive to save shock loading the gearbox

Hi, and thanks for the welcome.
Great, I'm glad that you guys think this seems possible.
Thinking about it, yes the diff shouldn't be too high. I'll do some research into those rubber couplings.
As far as gearing goes, I'll probably be using 12" mini wheels so it would probably limit top speed but for my purposes this
shouldn't be a problem.
To give you an idea of what I intend to make (but without the spoiler!):
Basically a Kart Cross car. I've been researching online about Kart Cross (which seems to only exist in continental europe and scandinavia) and
it looks fantastic. I'd love for this to take hold over here in the UK. There's auto grass but ovals aren't my thing!
