Engine Stand - is this safe?

I bought an engine stand and the bolts that came with it to bolt the engine to it did not all fit. The bottom bolts are as provided, but the top ones are smaller (M8/M10, can't remember) which are the usual bolts to mount the bellhousing.

Am I going to be OK to leave the engine hanging from these four bolts for a while? I guess it should be fine, but always get nervous as it seems heavy for four bolts!

I have put a link to the same post on the Tiger site as I am not sure how to post pictures on here!

Thanks in advance.

Mark.

That's exactly how my Zetec is right now, and has been like that for a month or so. Four bolts, as long as they are sizable, will be more than sufficient. It's more important to make sure they go into a strong part of the engine - bell housing bolts are perfect.

Cheers, Chris

Cheers for the replies chaps, I am happy with the bottom two bolts, but are the top, smaller ones OK assuming they are M8 (as I really can't remember)?

don't worry about it, two M8's will be fine - my pinto is only held on with two 1/4" bolts (6.3mm) on a much closer spacing and pinto's are a bit heavier than your engine

a single M8 bolt grade 8.8 in tension should be able carry ~2 tonnes (without any shock / dynamic loads at least) a grade 4.6 is more like 800kg
the load on the top bolts depends on the bolt spacing, the offset from the centre of gravity and the engines weight - I could do the maths to prvove it to you if you'd like but you'd need to measure a few things first....

I hung a V8 Landover engine off of it the same way and a 200tdi landrover engine. Both Bloody heavy. Used the Bell housing bolts UNC ?? (about M12)
