electronic ignition thoughts

got a friend whos fitted elec ignition to his car, but its not running right, ie it dies all the time, then when you get it going it runs really badly. im thinking its the spark timing thats way off, possibly the fueling a bit too.

am i on the right tracks?

cheers!

Probably, spark timing is definatly where I'd start to check

Also check you've got spark at all cylinders, and they are sparking at the right point in the cycle.

And in the right order, like 1342 etc.

You'd need to know what electronic ignition system it was, how it was fired and how dwell/spark timing was controlled before you could make a meaningful guess, but the above are a start - check all plugs fire, check they fire in the right order, then hook up a timing light and check they fire at somewhere around 10btdc at idle (or whatever is spec'd in the manual). From that point on you're looking at intermitten problems like poor wiring, wrong dwell, coil overheat due to poor settings if something like megajolt...

Megajolt doesn't have any dwell control, it's all handled by the EDIS module. Megasquirt is the system famous for blowing up coils and drivers.

Haven't looked into megajolt in much detail I admit.

MS does indeed destroy drivers/coils when the user can't figure out the settings
