Where has my gear gone?

HELP!!!! anyone please.....

OK - I was foolish. I bought a second hand "Type 9" box that had recently been taken from a Sierra. It is a rebuild unit (from Ford) and at the time - very presentable.

This is a short input shaft box.

This was some time ago (5 years) and I have only just got round to putting the speedo in to get it on the road this year.

The speedo drive was not working so:
Found and fitted a second hand speedo - no movement
Fitten new speedo cable - no drive to the speedo head
Fitted new Speedo Drive Gear - no drive to speedo head

This seems strange because I removed a stub of an old speedo cable that had been cut off when I fitted the gearbox.

At this time I put my finger in the hole where the plastic Speedo Drive Gear goes. Can you imagine my surprise to find that I cannot find the speedo drive gear on the output shaft!!!!

Anyone any idea where it may have gone?

my guess would be it was never there since before you bought it, and the bit of cable cut off was just there to plug a hole

Some one has removed it
you take the plug out the opposite side to where the drive goes to fit a new one

Where in the world are you

Where has my gear gone?

You may have just confirmed my darkest fears...

Well I replaced the small plastic gear - I noted that when I removed it that it as rubbing on something - I presume to be the output shaft.

Is it possible that the worm drive gear has shifted along the output shaft?

I suppose its back to an electronic speedo from ETB or something now...

Where has my gear gone?

I can't imagine anyone rebuilding a box only to leave out the speedo worm drive gear from the output shaft.

Oh - by the way - I'm in Brentwood - Essex.

Thanks very much for your comments

The gear on the mainshaft is a interference fit. If it has been taken on and off a few times it is possible for it to move on the shaft and dissapear. Or as said it may have been left off as I did with mine because I was using a speedo with a sensor on the driveshafts.

Steve.

Thanks Steve.

I'm now considering either taking the gearbox out or fitting an ETB speedo with the sensor on the diff.

Regards
