Engine Shopping List zetec/duratec

After much faffing about I think I will change the Pinto out of the MK Indy.

Looking to do a 2litre Zetec or Duratec transplant really, so am looking for advice especially from people who have done this recently. Obviously the Engine is required, but what are the other components that I need to look out for, engine mounts, starter motors etc ?

Currently have twin Dellorto 40's on the Pinto, but am really thinking about going for the standard zetec/duratec fueling, again any thoughts? Also, the "sparks" - I have a megajolt at the moment,, any good for the new engine?

Any prices or guides would be appreciated, along with what I may need to pick up from the scrappy. I am hoping the Pinto, Carbs (possibly, if not used) and megajolt could recoup some funds.

Loads of questions I know, but I want to get this sorted for the nice weather

2ltr onto a RWD gearbox.... Whats needed?

The megajolt would be of no use you will need megasquirt, why not but a zetec manifolf and fit the carbs to the zetec as I have done with mine. There is litte difference between the carbs and injection main difference is MPG possibly at top 5mpg better on an injected engine.

More to go wron and more expensive to fix on injection.

Main things you will need additionally if going injected, ECU, High pressure Pump, Swirl pot, more sophisticated loom, inlet plenum small alternator.

To keep costs down I fitted an exhaust manifold from a blactopand had a downpipe made (£35.00), fitted megajolt , used sierra alternator on carb side, Made my own mounts

Had sump cut and welded and modified to side for starter motot to clear, modified steering to clear oil filter

Can get you pics if you want

Pick the engine with the exhaust out the same side, Duratec and save making new holes.

By playing about with exhaust etc you may be able to salvage othert stuff as well.

If you keep the MJ and carbs the only expensive bit would be the manifolds

Exhaust - I bought the Fisher (BGH Geartech) one, around £300 delivered, nice bit of kit
Inlet can be had off eBay and top out about £150 but if you bide your time you'll get one for less than that.

If I did it again I'd use a flywheel with timing marks rather than faff about with a trigger wheel (I used the CVH flywheel to save weight)

ALSO, what do I need to do to please the DVLA ? What do they need from me so that the V5 can be changed, engine number etc

I'd go for the duratec and try to keep the ECU and injection side. I know big_wasa has made this sort of setup work on a zetec, but for you the duratec has the exhaust on the right side. Get the fuel pump /high pressure filter etc.

Hope that pinto hasn't been causing problems?

You know I'll say Duratec. Ours works brilliantly with the 'agricultural' bike carb and MJ set up. Totally simple, yet up-to-date performance, its fantastic to drive on the road and track.

There'd be hardly any wiring, your exhaust can probably be modded (cant remember what manifold you said you had though). The only big hit is the bellhousing/flywheel situation.

Duratec will be alot dearer and will also need a new bellhousing, so even more costs.
Zetec will pretty much bol straight up with tweeks to clutch etc.

By the time you have replaced body panels to fit a zetec, there will be no difference in cost so you may as well fit a duratec and be done with it.

The blocks are cheap enough now, and you are guaranteed at least 180bhp out of the box with loads more very cheap. Same power from a zetec is big money....

£/bhp the duratec wins hands down....

OK, more questions, sorry


* Car is currently registered and running the 2litre Pinto on an age related plate, so if I was to change the engine to something more modern, what happens about emissions testing/CAT etc. I guess the DVLA will need to be given the "new" engine number for the V5

* Can someone help me with the difference between Silver and Black top Zetecs.
