Megasquirt - RS232 to USB Cable

Anyone know where I can by a cable that WILL work with megatuner and tunerstudio

Have had a few in the past and coudn't get them to work eventually got a PCMCIA to rs232 adapter and used that howevery my laptop has now died and the new windows 7 one I bought doesn't have PCMCIA or PCExpress on it so I need a USB to RS232.

Anybody recommend a link to one that defo works.

We have a piece of test hardware in work that has a serial interface and I have never got a usb to serial adapter to work with windows 7.

We had to buy a Win XP laptop with a serial port in the end.

I bought a cheap £1.85 RS232>usb cable for my laptop... this exact one:

and it has worked flawlessly (other than the slightly annoying fact that whenever you unplug/replug it changes port number, but thats a minor issue).

I wonder if, because mine's an MS1, the MS2 faster data rate causes issues with the USB transmission method, but I can't see it. Good luck

J

Yeah if I was doing this at work I'd use a desktop with a serial port on my old D630 laptop or a PCMCIA card, but at home I'll need a 232 to usb converter.

Getting a new laptop at work as well so think my old d630 will be going back to IT soon so loose the com port on it as well

I got one of Maplin's cheap serial/usb cables. It works perfectly on my Win7 netbook after a bit of driver updating and port configuring - nothing fancy. I use Easimap but it has the same port handling code as anything else AFAIK.

i seem to remember that the issues with some adapters not working was down to com port settings? and MS/MJ not looking for the same COM port on the computer as the usb device was automatically set to?

i really think 'almost' all of them do actually work ok

I've had a Belkin one for years and it is the only one that I've had work with everything...

1 quick thing, I had a standalone usb to 232 converter. It wouldn't work when i plugged it into the megasquirt with a long usb cable. When I plugged it into the laptop directly with a long 232 cable to the ms it worked fine.... Don't understand!!!

I've got one of those two. I had to get the drivers from the fdti site, but it works fine on my netbook under win7.

Tunerstudio can't autodetect it, but I think that button has never worked. I run portcheck.exe to confirm its all fine before starting tunerstudio.
