Duratec to Type 9 problem

Transposed from Turbosports forum, uncaroberated but worth some attention.

Type 9 box to duratec warning
Imnot sure if this is common knowledge but after fitting my retro ford bellhousing to my type 9 box (2.0 version) the 1st motion/ input shaft has now put pressure on the end of the crank shaft and has damaged the crank beyond repair hence another rebuild and new crank.
The 1st motion shaft has to be shortened but was not unformed of this by retro ford etc and box appeared to fit fine. The gearbox case has started to leak oil and think it is cracked too.
The engine was driving/ running fine as far as I was aware.
Engine built again by scholar who did me a good deal so it is now brand new again bearings, rings etc etc and gearbox will have full rebuild with new case and then pretty sure I'll be selling the car.
Going to buy a cheap car and do more rallies even though the escort on epynt was the best buzz I've ever had! Time for change

Sounds like he's used a transit box with the short Bell housing, but it must have been a job to bolt up?

There are two lengths of input shaft and two lengths of bell housing sounds like he mixed them.





Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

cant see how you could mix them ? there is over an inch difference in input shaft length ?

if you had the longer input shaft 2.8i box, there is no way you could bolt this up without noticing
the extra length is very noticeable.

would the shorter bell housing on a standard T9 cause same problem?

Has anyone got any further info on this?

Is it a legitimate problem for all duratec installs using the cast alloy bellhousings (given that they are all or most of probably cast by the same people) or just some sort of unlucky combination?

Not heard of this one before....

Checked the length of the bellhousing on mine before installing and it was spot on. Bellhousing would slide straight up to the block with virtually no force if the clutch was aligned.

The only way it can put pressure on the end of the crank is if the spigot bottoms out in the end of the crank, which I am pretty certain it's normally a way off doing.

I think some people don't fit the dust shield to thier gearboxes. that would make the input shaft 1.2mm closer to the engine, It might be enough to throw things out.

yeah, i think the guys not installed it properly somehow. don't know how, but i'm not sure he's done it right...
