Ok to run through the gears while on axel stands?
Evening all,
I've been working on getting my gear indication working through my race technology dash, and i have come to the point where I need to test and
tweak. The only problem is that it's impossible to get my zx12r engine into any other gear than nutural or first without spinning wheels.
Would I be ok to get the car on axel stands and spin her up through the gears? (unless anyone knows of a way I can get it into gears without spinning
it up). Just bait concerned that their will be no load on the transmission.
Cheers
Tris

It will be ok. Bikes can be put into gear whilst on a paddock stand without issue. They can chatter a little if the chain is slack, so if youve got
a bit of backlash in the diff then you might get this but nothing to worry about.
Cant you put it in gear and hold the clutch in?
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

You'll get a load of clattering from the transmission. Someone on here did it a while ago and had a panic that his engine was furbar.

No, not even with the clutch in which I initially thought was odd but have since been told is normal.
But cool, will give it a go tomorrow. Ideally I could do with finding a private road somewhere in beds/ herts to give it more of a go, but so far
without much luck so it's alel stands for the mo....

Sounds like its just a bit of clutch drag then. LEave it on the floor with the handbrake on, and go through the gears with the clutch pressed in. It
should be ok, but will load the engine a bit so you might need to increase the idle speed.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

just put the handbrake on a click or two to take up the backlash/kickback when changing gears/revving up and down.

My bike won't go through the gears when stopped unless you let the clutch out a tiny bit just so it bites - it must shift the dogs a bit until
they engage. You should be able to do that with the car on the floor without moving it.
It is the only way I can get back to first if I emergency stop in a high gear.
