1.8 Sierra Pinto to 2.0 RS2000 pinto

Hi Guys!

At present I have a 1.8 Pinto from a Sierra with electronic ignition and carbs in my Seven. I have a rebuilt 0.5mm overbored 2.0 Pinto from a MK2 RS2000 that I am about to swap in and wondered if the 1.8 electronic ignition module and distributor will work with it. The RS2000 is a points driven distributor and I would prefer to be electronic.

Thanks...

I'm sure it'll work with either setup

but what carb's are you running and how worried are you about getting the last few BHP/MPG out of the car ?

btw - is that the dizzy based electronic setup with the vac. advance and the seperate amp ? (if it is don't throw it away whatever you do)

Thanks for the reply. At present I am not too worried about the BHP, just getting it running with the least amount of hassle.

I bought the car hoping it would be an ever changing and evolving project rather than going the whole hog with engine etc straight away.

Short term goals are to tidy up the car cosmetically (dash/paintwork/running gear) and to get this new engine in. Medium term is to tune the Pinto to get somewhere close to the max with it. Long term I have no doubt that reading the posts on here will have me planning something far more modern than the Pinto!

I kinda like the idea of having a bike engine and I am sure this is where my journey with the car will eventually end up, however I plan on making my way there slowly and enjoying the journey rather than going all out at once.

PS I will be running twin 40 dellorto carbs for the moment. I am sure there will be an upgrade at some point though... Yes the ignition is as you say, and I am not prone to throwing anything away ever which means I have a very cramped garage!

the vac. connection to the dizzy (points or electronic) could give you a problem with your carb's

connecting it up to just one cylinder will give it a pulse of vac. every intake stroke on that cylinder (i.e. you get a 'lumpy' vac. signal to the dizzy) this can case a few issues

you can leave it disconneded / blanked off (you'll see the aftermarket ones have it removed and re-tunned to suit) but this reverts you back to a 2D advance curve which will hurt your MPG and drivability

so you can connect a vac. line from all 4 cylinders to get round this, but you'll need to join these toghether into a small chamber then take a line from this to the dizzy (this should be able to average out the lumps) - this will give you a 3D system, but only with the stock dizzy's advance curve

the next step up is to use a distributorless electronic setup (all though you still need the bottom half of the dizzy on a pinto as it drives the oil pump) - this way you replace the dizzy with an ecu controlled coilpack that you can tune yourself

megajolt is the cheapest spark only ecu I know of and loads of folk on this site are running with it (inc. me although mine isn't built yet....)
I'd budjet around £130-150 depending on you cheap you can get the donor bits

if your planning to go for EFI in the future you might get an ECU that can do both (most have the opton of running ignition only) something like megasquirt, omex, emerald.... etc but obviously these cost quite a bit more

No - enjoy "arriving" a hell of a lot more than the journey, save yourself a tonne of money and go straight to bike engine now..............

Then start your (proper) journey again going from an older carb'd engine through injected then turbo'd.............
