radiator question
Hello, I want to fit a fan switch to my cooling system. Is it ok to cut a hole in the radiator tank and solder a plug to fit a switch into. its one of
those coolman radiators. Has anybody had any problems doing this?

I would try and get it as near as pos' to the thermo stat housing. Mine has ended up in the top hose around 2/3 way along. Thats where the
Raceline water rail put it on my first install. I would sooner it was nearer the stat so it see's the change in temp sooner and with out cooling
in the pipe work. It works fine but it turns the fan on at a couple of deg above what it should.
There is already a 22x1.5mm boss in a polo rad.

Its a compromise but the only real solution is to use a fan switch adpater inserted into the top hose, usually these use M14 fan switches.
M14 switches are available in a wide enough range of temperatures ratings to enable the switch operating temperature right be found for the engine.
Fan switch in and out temperatures should always be higher than the thermostat temperature, for a 90c thermostat 95 or 97c switch in is about right
with a 93c drop out.
Ideally the fan switch should work on radiator temp not engine temp.
Duty of fan switch is to control the temperature of coolant outlet from the rad to keep the coolant at a low enough temp at the water inlet to cool
the engine without over cooling. If this is the case he engine temperature can be controlled by the thermostat.
