Engine rebuild
Hi All,
As some of you may know, I am building a Mid-engined locost using a 2.0 20valve from a fiat coupe. This engine runs ok, a but tappy top end but didn’t
notice any real smoke or problems while it was in the donor.
As my garage is taking - and costing me a lot to do, I think the build is going to be pushed back a bit.
So I am going to completely strip down the engine over the winter in my clean and dust free garage. Plan is to completely clean, paint and replace any
parts needed. I want a minter engine in my kit car. (who wouldn’t....)
Any tips or does or don'ts i should be looking at?
I have some engine building experience.... but really this will be the biggest job I have done on my own and want it right.
There is no time pressures, I can just take my time and the garage will be ready in a few months time.
Cheers, Rob

good luck ordering the rebuild parts from fiat. i waited over a year for a new crank shaft.
from my experience 150bhp isnt much for such a heavy engine and the best i have ever seen out of a 2.0 5cyl is 185bhp in a mk1 bravo. it was quite
temperamental in that state of tune. you would be much better off fitting the 2.3 5 cyl from the stilo or the 2.0 turbo variant from a coupe if you
really must have a fiat 20v.
played with a few fiats and alfas in my time

Hi Ashg,
I have a complete 2.0 20valve TURBO.
I actually had a Coupe 20v turbo – which I broke up for a donor car, and so have the whole lot sitting in my garage. This engine should make 220bhp
with a rebuild, little bit more with some mods….
I did not really choose this engine, it was more to do with opportunity, basically I got the donor, broke it and made about £100 on it, whilst keeping
a lot of parts needed for the locost. I was attracted to the 5 Cylinder engine for its sound! The car I bought belonged to a mate of mine, who did
have electrical problems with it in the past, but apart from that the engine was sound, if not just a bit tired – 130k on the clock. Hence the
rebuild.
I was looking for any major do’s or do not’s I should be concentrating on??
Also, things like what colour schemes people go for when painting up there engine and gearbox.
Any tips would be appreciated, really just looking for ideas.

If it's over the winter (and it's anything like this winter), your biggest problem might be the cold, and condensation. I had a right
'mare keeping large bare metal objects rust-free this winter. As well as condensation on the metal itself, condensation dripping off the roof
was also an issue.
So, keep everything well oiled, and covered. This year I'm going with large plastic storage boxes and lots of sachets of silica gell, as well
as the oil.

Thanks for advice. I am hoping I won't have an issue with damp though. Have a look at my garage build thread - it's going to be very well
insulated.
