BMW Z3 1.9 Getrag 220 gearbox strength

Came across this gearbox, noticing it to be a compact unit. Being a lowish engine spec i guesss it probally not enginered as strong as other bmw boxes. I am wondering if it is at least stronger than an MT75 gearbox as the third gear is meant to be quite week. I will make an adapter plate so bolt hole alignment is not a problem.
If it is weak can anyone recomend a suitable box that is farily compact yet strong?
I probally am looking for a box to take 400 - 500hp.

Thanks
Darren

I've got one of the beamer ones - a low mileage unit in mint condition. You're welcome to borrow it for testing and pay me if you decide to keep it.

I'll get the actual code of the gearbox (so you can figure out ratios and so on) next week.

I was told they're very hardy units, but couldn't possibly quote a power handling figure. I would think an engine putting out 400hp would be on the limit, but the turbo guys don't seem to break them much when boosting the 1.8/1.9 Twinks

Check out the boxes fitted to Nissan SR20DE's, the toyota R154 and the Nissan box from skylines.

I don't remember which one is which but I think one of those is long and thin, the other short and fat (sorry for the vague descriptions), so may fit your car. All of those will handle silly power numbers, but aren't cheap.

Thanks for the replies, the honda s2000 looks like an interesting box, however the ratios are optimised for a high reving engine, rater than a v6.
I`m looking to graft a transfer box to the rear.
I have a skyline 4x4 box which is massive.

Thanks
Darren
