Has it always struggled or is this a new problem?

Did you change the fuel filter when you drained the water off?

If it's always struggled:-

Have you re-jetted the carbs? For info mine runs 200 main jets, rather than the standard 155's.

What ignition leads are you using? Mine ran badly using silicone / carbon leads, and loads better using a set of the original copper core leads.

Where is the fuel pump, the bike pumps seem to prefer to push fuel, rather than suck. I relocated my pump from under the bonnet back to the boot near the tank.

sounds like its overcharging, could be the regulator thats shot, or just a bad connection. I had the same problem so took the charge wire direct to the battery, no issues since.
