R1 4xv exhaust on tiger super six 2.0 Zetec
Hi All
I have been doing a bit of investigation into a new silencer for My Tiger super six with a 2.0 Zetec silver top with zx6r carbs.
R1 Cans seem to be popular but I am trying to find out whether an r1 can would meet the noise tests for track days. I wondered of those who are
running r1 cans which of them do have found them ok noise wise. I also wondered how often they needed repacking.
If not I am obviously have to bite the bullet and get a custom can made up probably from Paul Gooderham but just trying to keep the costs down.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
James

I have an R1 titanium can that I used for my last couple of trackdays.
My car has a 2.0 Zetec and ZX6R carbs, same as yours.
It recorded I think about 85db at Motorsports events day in Abingdon. I bought mine secondhand and have never repacked it.
I also have a Westfield can which I use on the road and is much noisier.

R1 cans are hugely restrictive, the gases flow through 3 chambers before exiting the can.
Lots of people, me included have gutted the inside which is quite easy to do (have a search on here) and replaced the baffles with a perforated tube
and wadding.
This should get the noise down low enough, the other area to pay attention to is the induction noise, this can easily be as much if not more.
It's a nice cheap effective solution

What Revs was that at? That's very low.
Have you found the exhaust restrictive at all?
Does the titanium can you have originally have a cat in that you have now removed?
What sort of induction do you have?
Thanks

Does it depend on the can. Reason I ask is somebody on the tiger owners club had no restriction problems on his 200bhp silver top tiger.
All he did was adapt the inlet and outlet. He has now removed it because it was getting noisy so he decided to go for a runoff exhaust.

I think it was at 4500 rpm - is was very quiet, but sure how accurate their figure was
It is resrictive compared to the Westy can.

A bog standard R1 can will be very quiet, easily within db levels at track days.
I used to take two cans to track days, the restrictive standard one and a gutted one, swapping them about takes the edge off the top end, you can
easily feel this when you regress but never got thrown off for noise so sold it.
If you just use the standard can it will work, do not forget chopping off the end and putting a 90 degree bend in helps as noise does not like bends,
also pointing the outlet at the ground or under the car can also remove a few DB.
There is not really any wadding in a standard R1 can, just empty chambers and little tubes, if it started to get noisy either it was a gutted can and
the wadding wore thin or the baffles started to fall apart.

I am thinking of doing the same and acquiring two cans.
What is involved to gut the standard can and put a standard 2" perforated tube in the middle of it?
