Coolant disposal?

How should one dispose of water/coolant from a motor? Can it go down the drain?

Just leave it in a shallow open container and the neighbours cats will dispose of it

I do this - probably not supposed to, but I reckon better than putting down drain.

Is that what the staff tell you to do with it?

They use the old oil at the tip I believe. Was always told it's filtered and used by the army for tank engines.

Can't make it easier to use if it's contaminated with coolant!!!

Cheers,
James

According to this link

http://www.wasteaware.org.uk/db/material.cfm?id=54

It's ok to flush small quantites to 'foul water' - e.g down the loo. It doesn't say what represents a small quantity, but I usually take it to mean non commercial quantites (like one engine full every now and then is ok).
Apparently the toxicity is reduced by boiling it if you're concerned.

Hugh

Just to clarify, this is not a serious statement, coolant is poisnous to animals and they will drink it as it tastes sweet. Sorry if I offended any animal lovers.

Pouring it down the drain will be fine, I would flush it away with plenty water to dilute it down. This is presuming we are talking about changing the coolant in one or two vehicles and not a fleet of lorries.

Blimey the joke police are out in force today, it made me chuckle a little. Doesn't mean anyone is actually going to do it does it?

This society of people looking for things to pretend to be 'offended' at is just getting sad now.

It should go down the toilet unless you have a drain that you know feeds into the soil pipe. 'Brown' water will be treated and filtered. 'Grey' and rain water can run into streams or soakaways which is bad if it has coolant in it.

As for coolant in the oil thing at the tip, their relative densities will do an effective job of sorting it, but have you never left the oil drain can out with a filter draining in it.....and it inevitably comes on to rain?

My waste oil usually gets to the tip as about 30% water

nah cruelty to animals is never a joke. i don't care how it was intended. but any thread where anything poisonous needs to be disposed of, theres usually someone saying leave it out for next doors car. or a cat in their garden, bb gun. it not funny.
funny how its never, "leave it out for next doors dog"...

I usually just tip it on the gravelled part of the front garden, it seems to help keep the weeds down.I remember when people used to drain there oil and then tip it down the drain in the street back when i was a kid in the 60s, they didn't seem as concerned as nowadays.

Add some vodka to it and sell to the local chav's as alcopops. Gets rid of two noxious elements in one go.

Would my picture be as dreadful if I was holding a fishing rod?

Of course it would not have the same impact, nor would a nice side on view of shooting a few clays, Grouse, Pheasants or snipe & whatever your bag is

At the risk of causing you personal offence, every time I see you avitar it makes my blood run cold !!??

Frankly I find that image deeply disturbing.

Hungerford, Dunblane & Cumbria ..... Just give a thought to the victims of those events .... An image like that avitar was probably the last thing they ever saw

As said, no wish to cause you personal offence but I am personally offended every time I see that image !!

Can't believe that I am in a minority of 1 either ??

In answer to the threads original question .... My waste coolant goes away mixed with the waste oil ( Collected )

You're not in a minority of one. If you find an image on the internet you'd rather not view and you browse with Firefox install the Adblock plugin, right click on the image and click block image, you will be give the option to block all images from the site you are viewing, probably not the best idea, or block the specific image.

Works for me

What a sensible solution.

Where about in Fife are you?

Speak for yourself, it's not funny "to you".

It raised a smile here, but then I don't believe "any" topic is beyond the pale where humour is concerned.

As for "cruelty to animals is never a joke" if you have a look over on Sickipedia the animal section contains 7,765 jokes, a good percentage contain "cruelty"
