modeo st tdci possible boost issue help?

hi all

my daily driver st mondeo tdci has develop a small issue over the last 2 day,

started very minimal with the car on the motorway just touching the throttle around 1750 rpm the car lacked power and had slight surges up and down as if loosing power for a second (or boost)

yesturday got worse with black smoke comming out when this happended and now does it all the way up to 2500 rpm and does make the car judder and lacks power now,

i am thinking boost leak not sure if turbo could be at fault or injectors,??

any ideas where best to start i will be under the bonnet this morning to have a check,

cheers
all

Hi, dont know whether this helps, but first port of call is to check the piping to and from the turbo - this is reknowned for splitting (mine went at about 40k). After that, its a case of plugging it in and looking for fault codes - symptoms sound like when my EGR valve went (you're looking at a 350 quid fix at main stealer). Finally, hope and pray its not injector trouble - well known for goin at anythin above 80k), and thats not a pretty bill (close to 1200 quid!!), but mine to be fair has done 110 without any trouble.

Hope this helps!!

Word of warning from me, do not remove or even crack the pipes to the injectors, if they get they get contaminated even with dust they will need a refurb.

They are also numbered and configured within the ECU so cannot be swapped around, if you need replacements then the ECU will need configuring to suit unless you get injectors with the same tested flow rates.

The injection pumps and turbo's do go ~80,000 miles which ends up being a toss up between fixing or sourcing a low mileage complete replacement engine

Regards Mark

Agree with poorscousertommy on this one. Sounds very much like an egr valve problem. They normally cause the car to hesitate on throttle response then when they do clear you get all the black diesel smoke out the back for a few seconds.

Sounds EGR to me. Common as muck to go wrong. Also the injectors go wrong and give strange problems. Normally a misfire tbf.

hi thanks for the replies,

glad to day it was a intercooler pipe crached only. leaking the boost out, apparently a common fault also,

glad it was nothing too serious, not bad really the only thing gone wrong in 152k so i would say pretty good really touch wood,

cheers all again

nice simple fix, good news. 152k is good going

I had the injectors done on mine at a delphi agent (Feather Diesels Halifax, recommended) at 75k ish due to black smoke on start up and rough idle until warm (usual symptoms). Cost £600.

Great car for a daily hack though

One minor thing on mine, I had the downpipe/flexi replaced on mine, and straight after I had a noticeable whistle when on boost. Wonder if I have a cracked pipe somewhere - but would have thought like yours it would have caused more noticeable issues.
