marks on pistons
While trying to get my pump to prime, I noticed this sort of thing on the underside of my pistons. Most seemed to have this mark, more so on one side
than the other (big mark on drivers side, front and back of piston, little mark on pass side - photo shows one of the big marks and a little mark).
Is this normal? Any ideas what might be causing it?

looks a bit like oil stains or blowby gases,
are the small holes where the oil scraper rings are? dos,nt look too worrying

they are oil carbon deposits. the scraper ring clears the oil off the cylinder and the excess is pushed out through the holes. where the piston is
hot the oil residue gets baked on as carbon deposits. the one that has the smaller of the two deposits is like that because the oil squirter bar
below is directly squirting fresh oil up on to that area keeping it cooler than the other side which keeps it cooler and reduces deposit build up.
in summary there is nothing to worry about but a little bit of brake or carb cleaner would get it off if you are that worried about it being squeaky
clean. personally i would leave it as is.

That's good to know, thanks. Given the visually good general state of the bottom end I wasn't expecting a problem but it's nice to
have it confirmed.
