Gearbox - help please.
Hi all,
Hoping some one can help me....
Decided to take my gearbox apart to check the condition and clean it up. I have taken all the bolts off and can't quite split the bell housing
from the main casing. Any ideas? It comes out about 15-20mm then seems to jam up, I have tapped it with a hammer but don't want to break it. Am
I missing something??
It's a Fiat Coupe 20 valve Turbo - 5speed box. Photos below....
On, and one other question, I thought this car had a LSD as standard, looking at the diff it looks like an open diff, any one confirm?
Cheers, Rob

Sorry no help with the gearbox but if you post some more pics of the diff it should be fairly easy to spot whether its a LSD or not

I don't know that box but I'd be inclined to remove the gear change lever - sticky out thingy with spilned ball held in by two hex bolts
on the top of the box.
Failing that find Fiat OC website as IIRC there was a post on there concerning FWD gearboxes.
HTH.

I'm puzzled why you want to take it to bits? Noises perhaps thinking you can fix it? Spare box just to have a poke around in?
Not a diff expert but it looks a bit like a torsion type like this one...

Regarding the diff, this is what the Fait coupe club said:
"The LSD is a viscodrive, which sits between some diff gears and one of the driveshafts (a - rather large - difference in speed indicates spin,
so it will warm up the fluid and make the 'connection' between the 'friction' plates stiffer - they don't actually
touch, it's as if you would stir a wooden spoon in a thick soup and the bowl starts turning as well - thus at a certain point reducing the
different in speed and thus the wheelspin through that less giving connection), so it's external to the actual diff."
Any one familiar with this?
Regarding the reason for taking it to bits, just wanted to see what the insides were like, from what i have done so far, it looks in good condition
for 140K. I like knowing how things work and if its all been apart and rebuilt, i can be sure its not as likely to cause problems in the
future.....
Think i might just reseal it and paint it as it is. I wont have done any damage to it by unbolting it?

The box you see in my pics was a bit 'difficult' to get apart. It came open about the same as yours then stuck. After getting it apart
with a crow bar I found all the selector rods and forks were the bits stopping it. Smashed them to bits. But, all I wanted was the diff out!
And, something else that puzzles me.. why do want to paint it? Sorry, but I don't get the painting of gearboxes and diffs etc, even though both
of mine are

Thanks for the help. Painting it so it looks nicer. It was covered in about 5mm of crud when I got it! It will look rather scruffy bolted to my
painted up and detailed engine, so why not paint it.

Don't dismantle the diff if it's a viscous one. The sierra LSD works in the same way and if it is taken apart it lets the special fluid
out - which isn't a good thing...

Hi Mookaloid,
Well as you can see from the photo i have not taken the diff apart, not going to. When you say dont take the fluid out.... The diff and gearbox oil on
this box seem to be the same. I might be wrong, but i drained the oil out of the diff and then tried draining the oil out of the box, none came out as
the diff is the lowest point.
With a viscodrive LSD - what gearbox oil would you use?
