The overall casting dimensions etc are identical and it will fit perfectly but the valves and ports are larger. If you want better performace on the
cheap its a good swap.

For 711M engines the 1600GT head is different to a standard 1600 head and ANY 1300 head in that it has slightly bigger valves - a common misconception
is that the 1300GT head had bigger valves too but it didn't. The ports are the same whatever head you have.
Earlier engines could have combustion chambers in the head etc but are no better for it

but did they have less problems with hot-spots and/or melting pistons by having the chambred heads?

All 1600 heads from Escorts had the bigger GT sized valves, 1600 heads from standard (non-GT) Cortinas and Capris had smaller valves.
The heads with small chambers were very early ones from the late 1960's. Some tuners experimented with chambered heads from time to time but the
extra work involved never provided any benefit thus even the best hot rod screamer all steel total nutter with 190+ bhp still had a flat head. These
chambered heads also needed special pistons which were even heavier than the normal "slightly" heavy standard item.
If you are getting hot spots and are melting pistons I would suggest you have one or more of the common problems that causes this. Incorrect ignition
timing, poor fuel, too high a compression to name but three, cracks in the head also can cause hot spots. In the 15 or so years I ran tuned x-flows I
never melted a piston or had a cooling problem and my last engine was an 1860 all steel stroked jobbie with 175+ bhp. Chap I sold it too melted a
piston and cracked the head within 2 days, he played about with the ignition timing and that was the end of it.
