Carbs -A little more help please – sense check

Still setting up my carbs and making steady progress. I have a wideband AFR meter now and the carbs are now well balanced which has made a lot of difference.

I have been trying to get the carbs roughly set up in the garage (not under load), before I take it out on a private bit of road to get them closer. Is this a waste of time and can I only judge it when the engine is under load?

Currently what I am getting is the following (again just sitting in the garage after warming it up):

Idle: Very lean – up on approx. 17, which (so I hear) confirms why I am hearing small explosions coming out of the trumpets of the carbs as well as fuel spluttering out.
Mid range: Showing at about 13 – 13.5. (Which I hear isn’t too bad…but not perfect yet!)
WOT: Going rich, so going down to 11.5.

I previously had 1.6mm main jets, and it was lean even on WOT. Therefore I am thinking the next thing to try would be 1.7 or 1.75 main jet. I assume that once I have the WOT, it will be just a case of richening the mixture with the idle screws to get the idle looking good?

I have attached a picture of my set up – the main point of interest being the airbox set up – if that has any impact?

It would be great if someone could give me a bit of a sense check on everything that I have just said! I am taking the car somewhere tomorrow to drive but was thinking of getting the 1.7mm main jets sorted before I do.

Any inputs as always would be massively appreciated.

I can't help with the carb set up but I would like to say I have a great fondness for the 8v Vauxhall motor. I have had several and the motor will last you for ages 3 of mine did 250k miles and hardly burnt any oil (1 litre between oil changes).
Keep the oil clean and the breather clear in the cam cover and they will last for ages even if you have a heavy right foot like me. My SRI 2.0 inj motor used to return 36mpg and I used to drive it as fast as I could (where it was safe to do so).
