Zetec removal question

So the plan is to:

Drain all fluids;
remove ancillaries (starter; alternator; manifolds);
remove water pipes electrical connections;
remove the head;
disconnect the gearbox and take the bottom end out;
have a beer.

So the big question, can I separate the engine and gearbox in the car?
I don't see any reason why not but I'm not a great mechanic!!!

Thats prob the best way,just remember to support the bellhousing when you split it or the gearbox will drop to the floor.

Support gearbox at bellhousing, take weight of engine with crane, remove clutch cable, undo engine mounts, undo and remove bellhousing bolts, pull engine towards from of car, when free lift out.
The engine lifting eyes bolt to the head so don't take head off until out of the car.

Ahh yes, exactly the sort of mistake I'd make!! Cheers for the tip.

The best way to do it is to drop the front subframe , in fact it's the only way to get a gearbox out of a Mondeo and I suspect the engine as well, at least thats how I've always done it .Once the subframe is out the lower the engine or raise the car before seperating the engine /gearbox . If the head has to come off then your probably better off finding a decent engine , there's plenty out there that don't need rebuilding at all

i think hes removing it from a tiger hes bought.

Chris i have a tiger as well ... I was told there was not enough room to remove engine from gearbox worth a quick check on tiger owners i think .....

I pulled my engine and box out together ...... New one went back in easy enough with box attached also ...

Cheers for the advice guys!!
Engine out, looks like the bottom end has seized (reason for removal). Will defo' rig up some kind of hoist to put it back in.
Managed to get the bottom end out underneath the car, just!! Time for a well earned beer and some food.
Tomorrow the bottom end strip begins...
