bad rattle

I've just arrived at stoneleigh. As we pulled off the M6 noticed a bad rattle. This is in gears 1 to 4 but absent in 5. The box is a type 9 is this terminal as I have 140 miles to get home.

Is it the same noise when off the throttle? Is it there when coasting or in neutral ? Sure it's not the release bearing?

I did think that, when I was crawling into the car park with a little bit of clutch imput then no noise. Will have a look when the exhaust cools. The noise was constant when in the lower four gears. Will have to see as the noise is like something is dragging but it is not

If the fork came off would you be able to change gear ok, the gear linkage/ change is fine and the clutch works ok. The rattle appeared to go when the clutch was depressed.

Weel the fork cannot move very far if it does come off AND if it has I'd expect the pedal travel to have changed. As already said the realease baering may have started to come apart with one on the retaining steel plates perhaps running on the input shaft ( but the noise would still be there when the clutch was depressed.)
