Turbo advice needed

Hello all, Im after a bit of advice,

When I got my engine the turbo wasn't fitted and it wasnt supplied with a actuator, I have acquired one since however its clearly not the right one! as you can see in the pictures below the bracket on the turbo and the wastegate dont line up, Am I missing something or do I need to take the turbo apart to move the bracket round? also if anyone could shed some light on where to get the right actuator from? as the only ones I can find have 2 studs coming out the bottom and there not going to fit the bracket that I have. The plate on the turbo has the following numbers

Providing the exhaust inlet and compressor outlet are where you want them, I would just use an actuator with a dog-legged shaft. Or wait until it is in the car then you'll know if everything else lines up 1st. On my install, the actuator bolt locations were 180 degrees from where they needed to be. I made an adapter from 3mm steel so the actuator fitted inline with the gate.

from memory the exhaust fitment looks like a ford but i dont recognise the flange with the big round hole in it. If thats where your actuator fits, i dont know who. Actuator fitment isnt critical. As long as the flap is opened then it is working. As said above, position your compressor outlet and your exhaust housing where you want them and make a little bracket to fir the actuator you have. The actautor bar doesnt have to be straight, as mentioned, they can have a dog leg in them, just make sure it is the same or less than the boost you want to run.

From the pictures above the bracket that holds the actuator appears to be bolted to the exhaust housing but most turbos have them bolted to the comp housing to stop the actuator getting too hot and melting the diaphragm inside.

Thanks for the replies! So if I take it apart and remove the existing bracket put it back together and then make one that comes of the compressor and then just fit the actuator I have it should be ok? Also how much does the actuator move? how do I go about setting it up? Do I have the wastegate closed when the engine is off and then it will sort itself out? and also where does the feed for the actuator come from? Is it the inlet manifold or from the outlet on the turbo itself? Sorry for all the questions but im just a little new to all this turbo jiggery pokery! Thanks for all the help!

when you fit the actuator, close the wastegate and just hook the actautor bar over the gate pin and put a circlip on to hold the actuator bar in pace. Most actuator bars are threaded to make them adjustable. The compressor housing usually has a small brass vacume pipe spiggot outlet, connect a small hose to this and the other end goes straight to your actuator pipe inlet. If you are running a boost controller it would normally T into this pipe.

If you browse ebay you will probably find one that fits already for only a few quid. Most standard actuators run about 7 - 10 psi but its easy to test it and see what it opens at.

Edited as i have just seen you are building a Cosworth powered car, is the turbo from a cosworth? if so just buy cossy actuator

Thats brilliant thank you very much! I shall get cracking on that tonight I think! The engine is a Cosworth YB but it came from a mk2 escort so wasnt straight out of a sierra hence its not been that straight forward! I have acquired a -31 actuator from a sierra but thats the one that doesnt fit but it will make it fit!

I do have the brass fitting on the side of the compressor part of the turbo so I shall connect that up.

Seeing as I have got your attention any advise on how to go about feeding the water to turbo? At the minute I have got a short bit of silicone hose from the outlet which is then joined to a steel pipe that came with the engine but didnt really fit anywhere so I managed to bend it to get it to the right shape to fit but im not really happy with it, Will silicone hose bo ok to run from the outlet on the water pump directly to the turbo banjo fitting?

i am not really sure how the stock cossie set up works, but silicone hose connected to the short metal banjo bolted to the turbo is normally fine as long as the metal pipe is long to keep the silicone away from the cast iron turbine side of the turbo. You could always add some heat shield but good quality silicone is pretty tough.
