MK Indy GSXR - air filter options? Updated 16/01/13
I am after help as to which type of air filter I should be using for my GSXR engined MK Indy?
The GSXR1000 trumpets when on the throttle bodies were about 10mm off the bonnet so I have purchased some shorter GSXR750 trumpets for more clearance.
I also bought a Pipercross PX600 C6002 (box filter with internal height of 40mm, external 60mm) but this sits too high by about 30mm. I have also
offset the holes in the baseplate (cardboard template) to help lower the overall height of the filter.
I was wondering if I should have got the dome filter but the shortest dome filter on the Pipercross site is 90mm so this probably wont be any
better.
Can anyone offer and advice as to what I should be doing to resolve the issue as I don't want to have to cut a hole in the bonnet.

Hi
We had a similar problem with our Indy R1
A bonnet with the air scoop enabled us to use the R1
Air box reversed, see our archive.
Or cut hole ?

If you could modify the original airbox
This would reduce induction noise considerably.
We thought if its ok for Yamaha must be ok for us.

I managed to get a 90mm pipercross under the bonnet of a Westfield - which had a nice bulge in the middle of it, being Westfield's V8/Mega
bonnet. Tight, but OK.
Suggest you do the same? make a plug, make a mould, make a nice bulge, cut a hole in the bonnet and laminate in.
Alternatively, simply cut a hole in the bonnet, refit the original length trumpets, a sensibly large foam filter and have it all out in the breeze.
Sod the aesthetics.

As you are on an angle, the domed C602D would save you some space due to not having the square top corner that the box filter in the picture does.
However, also look at the C502D - this is 25mm shallower than the C602D (65mm external height as opposed to 90mm) but the 40mm internal height may
start to be an issue? This filter is also smaller in length and width. You would also need a new plate for this.
I stock all of the above if required.

I have mocked up part of an airbox from cardboard which would use the bonnet as the top of the air box (idea taken from clairtoo's tutorial) to
see how much space there would be. The airbox wouldnt necessarily be as big as this cardboard mock up but the clearance from the bonnet to the
trumpets would be the same. I would then have a pipe to a cone filter positioned somewhere where there is cool air.
The bonnet would rest against the curved cardboard. Would there be enough clearance between the bonnet and trumpets? Is there a minimum clearance?
(the cardboard resting on the edges in the last two photos represents the bonnet)

I have changed this idea slightly now. I have remade the cardboard template for a custom air box, that will be made from aluminium, that can house
the original bike air filter. I will put a top on it so it doesn't seal against the bonnet, which was the original plan. I will also cut a
couple of intake holes in the side of the airbox and duct this to a hole in the side of the bonnet.
Does this look like a feasible idea? I am still open to other suggestions if anyone has any?

The earlier engines are superb, says me with some success in Sprinting.
Airbox looks great. The shorter trumpets won't harm things too much, the K1-4's are blessed with good mid-range.
Should all be very neat when done, very nearly there. PAIR will all go to give a nice clean look across the head, beautiful, you've more
patience than I have.

Looks good. IMO it is better to not use the bonnet to seal the airbox as if you take it to a rolling road they remove the bonnet which would screw
with your mapping, so the lid is a good idea.
I built something similar (secondary injectors were an experiment).
Just a couple of thoughts from that experience;
You need to provide a mount for the air-temp sensor (the green thing), it is easiest is to cut the brass threaded section out of a stock airbox and
bond it into your new one.
Making the filter easily removed, whilst ensuring the air has to go through the filter is quite tricky.

Possibly of interest, I went through a number off clearence issues with my engine (although a CEC) and gsxr 750 TB's using the same
trumpets........to cut a long story short, I couldn't fit the piper backplate and filter due to room, but ended up with some ramair filters that
were made for the job.
