Oil surge

Just has my XE refreshed after quite a few track days last year mainly at Blyton which doesnt have many straights.

Basically it had taken out the shells on number 3 which look like it was caused by starvation, which has now made me paranoid at looking at the oil pressure gauge constantly

What i am seeing is the needle dropping when under hard braking or long sweeping corners which i think caused the grief last year.

It doesnt drop all the way off just around 20 or 25 psi. i think this has always happened but now i see it more than usual as i am more aware.

The sump is a pukka SBD/QED cast alloy sump with a few baffles. The Westy lads have used it for years.

Does anyone lese see this happen in other car engine cars?

Have seen this happen on the SBD sump a couple of time mate.
On the QED sump you need to double check the oil pick-up pipe clearance to the bottom of the sump as i saw one once that was way too tight and actually rubbing on the bottom of the inside of the sump.

The SBD sump needs the oil level to be at the 'Max' mark on the dipstick.

LED Low pressure oil warning light sat in your line of sight behind the steering wheel is a good idea and had a 25 psi one on mine.

What Viscosity oil are you using ?


You know the answer though for complete insurance, Dry Sump

Thought you maybe along at some point mate

It's always upto Max on the dipstick and the clearance is fine on the pickup.

Using 10w60 fully synth so should be fine.

Dry sump is the key but don't have the spare money for the pump and tank as yet.
I have the Pace sump ready to fit..,

Just interested if others are seeing the same effects on other car engine cars.

Do you know anyone that managed to solve it with mods like adding wings etc?

Have heard one or two have had success by fitting a 'Trap door' type arrangement to their sumps, but afraid i haven't seen it or know of a photo.

You should be fine with the 60 viscosity oil as i believe that is what SBD recommend for track days.

Only thing i can think off is to have a look at the current baffling in the sump with a view to modifying it ?



My old Zetec engined Westy had the Scholar sump and that had zero surge on the corners or the bottom of the straight at Curborough,
But i probably wasn't going quick enough to really find out...

Thought of these too and to be honest had a couple of mods done but they didnt work

Think i'll save up.....

They do interest me but i havent heard enough about them to be wanting to buy one.

Are they easy to fit etc?
