engine 'bawking'

I went for a drive earlier, an hour in with no hicups and then suddenly its making a bawking sound on full throttle, theres a lack of power and its struggling above 4500rpm

the engine is a 98 cbr900

i got home and checked for a spark, all present
took bottoms off the carbs and cleaned out
tried with and without air filter
new inline fuel filter

still has the same problem

any ideas?

getting rather sick of this car now track day on saturday too!

could be a good shout

is it possible to replace with a coil pack off any bike? or would it have to be a cbr900 one? chances of me getting a spare to try before the weekend is slim

or is there a way i can test it? or rig up my multimeter to see what its doing whilst driving?

Assuming it was OK when you last used it, fuel etc good and no changes, then outside the box….

iv just replaced the reg/rec for a brand new one 2 days a go, it better not be that!!!

was running fine when i set off and hadnt had this problem before.

could you explain how the reg failing would cause the stuttering?

no relay for the fuel pump, it seems to be ticking away just fine
something i had noticed though is the fuel filter (inline one) only has a dribble of fuel in it, though i guess the pump has filled up the chambers in the carbs?
its been running fine like this before anyway

Oh yes, sorry didn't twig that was you!

How's the charging voltage now?

Its a known issue, no I can't explain it, but it can cause poor running when failing,. Bust as you say it won't be that!!!

it better not be that!!

voltage sits at..... 14.8 i think it was, seemed high to me, but its very constant! it never changes no matter how high the revs go.
with it being a new one etc i assume that its all ok

i think il double check it tomorrow just for peace of mind/rule it out

im quite tempted just to buy a spare engine and throw it in as this ones giving me nothing but trouble lately

yes it had fuel in though it had crossed my mind on the first day of trying to find the problem....

In my defence.... I know bugger all about carbs....

when i took them apart to clean, I didn't want to tinker too much in case I made things worse, so i just took caps off and cleaned with carb cleaner and cotton buds and put the caps back on, three times i did this!!!!

and I didn't once notice that one of the four main jets was completely unscrewed while the others were nipped up tight.

how I didn't notice I'm not sure, too busy looking for dirt than looking for loose bits i guess

at least now I know my fuel filter is new, fuel lines have no blockages, carbs are clean inside (and the jets are tight ) my coils work, ht leads and plugs are fine, reg/rec is fine and nothing else is causing issues

bloody muppet

Trackday thoroughly enjoyed

I even won a medal for the sprints! Most consistent times!
For six timed runs they were all within 0.13 seconds I think he said!!
It's no rocket ship, 1:16.01 was my best, got a 1:16.08 with a passenger too
