xr4x4 gearbox-2 wheel drive

Hi all, just to let anyone else know that its fairly straightforward to convert a Sierra XR4x4 gearbox from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive.
First removed the transfer box and then obtained a normal 5 speed sierra box then;
1. remove output housing
2. take off selector spring return mechanism
3. using puller remove speedo worm gear

refit all these items on xr4 gearbox and you then dont have the problem of the gearbox input spigot NOT engaging with the crankshaft.
Also you have the speedo drive to connect to, as the original 4x4 one is set in the front diff!!

OOOH have you actually done it then? Only lot's of people have heard it's possible but nobody seems to be sure. I myself have seen evidence it is possible for both type-9 and MT75 boxes. What box are you talking about? Got any photos of the process?

Cheers

Yes have done it, all the internals are the same, ( in the output housing that is), it is a type 9 with the removable ally bellhousing.
Went to local trannsmiss company and asked if it could be done they said yes for about £80-£100, so i thought save meself a few pennys, and do it meself.
Got all new gaskets and oil seals for about £16 on ebay and have done a 'dry' run so to speak, ie put it all back together with old gaskets to check gear selection etc, and all seems fine!! colin

By the way - have you still got the transfer case lying around? I always wanted to take one to bits and play with it.

Hi Hector, Liam et al,

I'm thinking of going this route with an MT75 'box. Liam, you mention that you've heard it's possible, has anyone actually done the MT75 conversion?

Thanx,

Cheffy.

I dont think that its possible on the MT75 as the tail housing is not removable on these boxes!

Dunno - the mt75s look like they come apart in exactly the same place as the type 9s. You could certainly remove the rear section of my 4x4 box by unbolting, and the front sections of 2WD and 4WD boxes look the same.

But i've only heard it's been done - wish I knew where. Most probably on here somewhere but no hard evidence. If I had the two boxes I'd be tempted to pull them apart and have a look...

The mt75 can be changed from 4x4 to 2wd. But the box requires the bearings to be preloaded. So its a job for the pro's.
I'm getting one done soon. A local gearbox place said that they will do it. Its about 2 hours work for the at £35 an hour. But there is a bouns.
If the 2wd box is built up with the old 4x4 bits you get a cossie 4x4 box.
So you get a V6 2wd box and a Cossie 4pot box to sell on
